City's hunger crisis grows

Food pantries can't keep up as demand soars

An alarming number of food pantries and soup kitchens in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx are being forced to turn people away hungry, a new survey shows. Demand for food pantries and soup kitchens has skyrocketed throughout New York City--growing by an estimated 20% this year, combined with an estimated 11% last year, according to an analysis conducted by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. Presently, 1.3 million New Yorkers --one in every six residents--cannot afford an adequate and consistent food supply and must rely on pantries and shelters, statistics show. For it's annual hunger survey, released this week, the nonprofit coalition polled 265 of the more than 1,200 charitable feeding agencies in the city. The survey found 76% of responing agencies in Queens said they didn't have enough food to meet the rapidly increasing demand , and the case was the same for 67% in Brooklyn and 65% in the Bronx. By contrast, that figure was 36% in Manhattan and 29% on Staten Island.

How a blood clot can prove to be deadly

HILLARY CLINTON'S 1998 health scare came from a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT)--in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs.In severe cases, a clot can break loose and travel to the lungs. A pulmanary (lung embolism) can cause death. DVT's causes include prolonged sitting or an inherited blood-clotting disorder. Older people physically inactive for long periods are top candidates. Signs and symptoms can include swelling in ankles and/or feet. Doctors suggest getting up to walk every hour when traveling long distances on a plane or in a car, elevateing your legs when watching TV reading , and wearing support stockings to improve circulation.

The Digital Television Transition--What is it ?

The DTV transition refers to switch from analog to digital television. Digital technology will provide improved picture quality and sound quality like that experienced at the movies.Congress set the deadline of February 17, 2009 for the DTV transition. This means that on that date all U.S. television stations will stop broadcasting in analog format as they do now, and will transmit only in digital instead.

What Consumers who are Considering the Purchase of a TV Set Should Know

When buying television sets and other equipment such as DVD players, consumers should know whether or not the equipment includes a digital tuner.( TV equipment that includes a digital tuner is sometimes referred to as a "digital receiver." ) Digital tuners are needed to watch local broadcast stations that will be sent in digital format after February 17, 2007 must either purchase a TV set equipped with a digital tuner or purchase a digital-to-analog converter box that will convert those over-the-air digital signals into analog so that they can be displayed on an analog device. Analog -only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services.

Digital-to-Analog Converter Box Coupon Program

Between January 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all U.S. households will be eligible to request up to two coupons, worth $ 40 each, to be used towards the purchase of digital -to-analog converter boxes. As described above these converter boxes are designed to make over-the-air digital television signals viewable on analog -only TVs, and thus are not intended analog-only TVs hooked up to cable or satellite service. The National Telecommunications and information Administration ( NTIA) is running the coupon program. For more information, visit the NTIA website at

APPLE MAKES NICE OFFERS $100 CREDIT

A day after chopping $200 off of the most advanced model of the iPhone, Apple is trying to appease angry customers who paid full price for the gadget by offering them a $100 store credit. In a letter on the company's Web site, Apple boss Steve Jobs apologized for the misstep and acknowledged he had received hundreds of e-mails from iPhone customers who were upset about the price cut, which came only two months after the eagerly awaited portable device hit store shelves at $599. " Even thought we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even thought the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price," Jobs said. Jobs said customers who bought an iPhone --a combination cellphone , music player and Web browser -- and did't receive a rebate would be eligible for a $100 store credit towards the purchese of any product at an Apple retail outlet or at it's online store. nypost -9-6-07----p-47

Giuliani: I misspoke about ground zero

Washington- Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Friday that he misspoke when he said he spent as much time,if not , more , at ground zero exposed to the same health risks as workers combing the site after the Sept. 11 attacks. " I think I could have said it better", he told nationally syndicated radio host Mike Gallagher."You know ,what I was saying was, 'I'm there for you." The former New York mayor upset some firefighters and police officers when he said Thursday in Cincinnati that he was at ground zero " as often , if not more, than most of the workers ." " I was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things they were exposed to. So in the sense, I'm one of them,"he told reporters at a Los Angeles Dodgers -Cincinnati Reds baseball game. Fire and police officials responded angrily, saying Giuliani did not do the same work as those involved in the rescue, recovery and cleanup from the 2001 terrorist attacks, which left many workers sick and injured. On Friday Giuliani said he was trying to show his concern for the workers' health. " What I was trying to say yesterday is that I empathize with them, because I feel like I have that same risk". he said. There were people there less than me , people on my staff , who already have had serious health consequences, and they weren't there as often as I was," Giuliani said. "but I wasn't trying to suggest a competition of any kind, which is the way it comes across. Giuliani' s explamation further angered his ground zero critics, prompting several to issue a statement demanding an apology. " He is such a liar, because the only time he was down there was for photo ops with celebrities , with politicians, with diplomats," said deputy fire chief Jimmy Riches, who spent months digging for his firefighter son. " On 9/111 all he did was run. He got that soot on him, and I don't think he's taken a shower since" By Libby Quaid at Yahoo

According to sources , a furious Selig considered suspending Sheffield for his remarks in USA Today July 27 , but insted settled on a fine. In the USA Today story , Sheffield was quoted as saying he was "sick of Bud Selig and Major League Baseball and the way they have been grandstanding " on the issue of steroids. He then went on to call the commissioner a liar." Why doesn't Bud Selig tell the truth? he asked. "Why does he keep lying and saying he doesn't know nothing about (steroids in baseball in the ' 90s). Phone fans smitten despite bug bytes---- iPhones

Widely reported i-glitches couldn't dampen iPhone user'spirits after a weekend of frenzied buying for Apple's lastest must-have gizmo. "I spent $650, I expect it to work the day I buy it" said Jarred Ramos 21, an Upper West Sider who claimed his iPhone froze while uploading his music. The problem was easily remedied at the SoHo Apple store."I'm happy I got it fixed but it sucks I had to come back here the next day, he said. A day after the iPhone's debut, AT&T announced yesterday it had sold most of it's initial stock of the all-in-one cellphone, music player and personal computer. Analysts estimated the number of units sold reached 400,000 by the end of yesterday, doubling earlier forecasts. "Virtually all of our stores sold out of the iPhones (Friday) night. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegal said. Refusing to say how many had been bought. Apple was tight-lipped about how many iPhones were on the market - and, according to a SoHo store worker, was even keeping its own employees in the dark about how many have been sold and when the next shipment is coming. The worker guested that about 1,500 phones sold in the first 90 minutes. Shortly after snapping up the iPhones, many users returned to retailers reporting a variety of problems-- but not disappointment. Photographer Mark Hall, 43 who had waited 10 hours in line Friday to buy his iPhone, gushed over the device, even though he said he couldn't access his Road Runner email account on it. Calling the contraption " splendiferous," he added. If you play with one, you buy one" Liz Gusnano, 47, saw her cost rise significantly when it turned out the operating system on her computer, which enables her to transfer music and other files to the device wasn't iPhone- compatible. " I haven't been able to use it yet" she said. " I had to come back and spend $130 more on the operating system. I hope I can get it up and running today. It looks like it will be terrific."Users praised the iPhone which runs $499 for a four -gigabyte model and $599 for eight gigabytes--applauding its Internet speed, video quality and touch-screen features.Jed Latkin, 33, of the Upper West Side, watched half of '' Die Hard 2" with his wife on his iPhone. "I definitely think it was worth the wait"he said.About the only people let down by the iPhone were the numerous Craigslist and eBay peddlers who doubled their money but had been hoping to resell the device for three or even four times its retail value. George Zygablo, 32, of Somerville, N.J. and several friends stocked up on five iPhones and sold them online for $1,100 and $1,200 a piece. By yesterday afternoon, he only had two left. "I'm a little bit disappointed that we couldn't sell them for more . The five biggest gripes:

1. AT&T is the exclusive carrier,so some buyers had to pay cansellation fees with their cellphone carriers.2. The screen freezes while uploading data. 3.You can't cut or paste from messages like one can on a BlackBerry.4.In many cases, the phone is incompatible with e-mail or other programs on users' personal computers (right).5. There is a limited number of ringtones and fairly generic selection for a fancy device. LeseDunton

HUMAN IMPACT ON THE LIVING ENVIROMENT OUR EARLY HUMAN ANCESTORS

As the animals continued to migrate to warmer climates so did the hunters. Over time some of the groups of early humans changed their life styles. They settled in an area and became farmers.Over time villiges developed around these farms. As the populations of these villiges increased so did the need for food and more housing. As the early native Americans removed trees from sections of the forest, the soil beneath those trees was exposed to the weather. Wind, rain and overuse of the topsoil caused the farms to become less productive.Deforestation of the rain forests and Desertification of grazing lands are serious issues now facing many countries. The rapid growth of the worldwide human population has placed a great demand on the use available land. This may upset the ecosystem processes that maintain a balance of nature. The major function of trees and other green plants in the ecosystem is to obsorb carbon dioxide from the air and recycle it into breathable oxygen. As the combustion of fossil fuels increases and the number of trees in the forest decreases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere becomes greater. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.It allows the solar energy of the sun to pass through it,but it prevents the energy from reflecting back into space. This buildup of the sun's solar energy may be a cause of Global Warming, air pollution, water pollution and land pollution And have also had an impact on natural ecosystem processes. The United States Enviromental Protection Agency was established to protect the health of humans and to maintain the enviroment. The EPA monitors and enforces the rules and regarlations of the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. -----------Adapted from N.Y.Daily News 5-24-07

RANGEL SEES A (W)ANGLE

BELIEVES PREZ WILL SAY WE WON &THEN QUIT WAR

President Bush will declare victory in Iraq and begin scaling back troop levels in the coming months because Republican lawmakers will repudiate him if he doesn't,Rep. Charles Rangel said yesterday."The President knows it's over" Rangel declared in an interview with the Daily News Editorial Board. "The Republicans know it's over". " I think the President's going to come up with some compromise, and he's not going to admit failure. He'll probably say we've won, but it's going to happen...and I don't know how many soldiers die while it's happening."Republicans are going to make it happen---no Americans are going to make it happen." he said. The political die was cast, Rangel said, when a delegation of GOP lawmakers visited the White House recently and put Bush on notice their support for the war is beginning to erode as the 2008 elections approach." The war is going to end ". he added. The President is in the 15th round . He's lost every round. The public is against him, and the Republicans are waiting for an opportunity to break politically."Despite Bush's reputation for hanging tough,Rangel said, the President understands that he cannot sustain an unpopular war with Republician defections."The Republicans want toget reelected,"he said. "I don't know if any of you know the burning desire to get reelected. It is as though the demons actually take over, and children and mothers are no longer important"Rangel who said he and Bush get along well personally despite profound policy differences, also said Bush has to be affected by the depth of public opinion against his policies."This man is down in the polls" Rangel said. " I mean, hey,we (all) got feelings. "When you become the joke of America ---you got kids, you got friends --it's got to hurt you." The powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee also predicted the immigration reform bill that passed the Senate will never make it through the House, where many Republican conservaties are vigorously apposed to the bill Bush has endorsed. "It ain't gonna happen." Rangel said. I don't see how it flies in the House." ----------Adapted from the New York Daily News 6-1-07

Subway hero swaps tracks for TV show

The Harlem Hero who dove onto a subway track is taking a different gamble.
Wesley Autrey saved the life of a seizure-stricken stranger by holding him under a roaring train
last January, tonight he'll try to win up to $1 million on "Deal or No Deal"Playing on the hit NBC
game show was far more nerve-racking than the split-section decision to jump on the tracks,
Autrey told the Daily News. I found myself hesitating more for the show," he conceded. I didn't
hesitate on the tracks because I didn't have time to. The train was coming too fast".Autrey was
standing on the platform at W. 137th St. and Broadway with his two young daughters when spasms knocked Cameron Hollopeter onto the track.Hearing an oncoming train, Autrey quickly jumped down to pin the flailing man still as the train passed over them. On the show Autrey bargains with an anonymous banker via host Howie Mandel for a sum of money. Autrey first chooses one of 26 briefcases that contain amounts ranging from a penny to $1 million. What's in that and subsequent cases won't be revealed until the show airs tonight. Autrey thought the game was just as exciting as his underground adventure. "I'm playing to win money that I know I'm going to walk home with," he said. "The other one is playing with time.I didn't have a second
to sit and say, "Should I choose this route? "Should I turn left?" Should I turn right?"This won't be the first time money's been thrown at Autrey since his Superman gesture."Donaldl Trump gaveme $10,000, he said. A billionaire from somewhere mailed me a check for $50,000.And various people from around the country sent checks for $5,000 $1,000 $100 $50, some even a dollar." But Autrey may not get to keep all of his rewards for his heroic act. He's currently battling Queens lawyer Diane Kleiman and her Hollywood partner over a contract he signed that would give them 50% of any money he makes from telling his tale. Tune in tonight to see how much Autrey takes home."He was a risktaker," said show producer Scott St. John,"which he Proved that day that he saved someone's life."
